Spiro | Grace Art Rooms (SGAR) is proud to present Select Reshape, Degroot’s first major body of work since embarking on his PhD at the Queensland College of Art.
Select Reshape will explore levels of reappropriation and replacement of imagery within contemporary painting. The paintings use and reuse similar shapes and are constructed layer upon layer by using photocopies, scans and Photoshop. Degroot selects shapes from the architecture of his surrounding environments, these forms become abstracted and obscured by their recorded perspective. By translating these forms onto the painted plane the work explores two-dimensional representations of space.
The works within Select Reshape apply adumbrate space such as overlapping forms, transparency, back to front spatial arrangement and perspective illusion as informed by contemporary flat screen technologies; he explores how these haptic surfaces can influence depictions of a similar space in contemporary painting.
