Project Description

Gerwyn Davies’ ‘Paradise’ will see the launch of SGAR’s first online show allowing the exhibition to be viewed on a global platform.

Similar to the whimsical tale a child constructs playing dress-ups, Gerwyn Davies has cloaked himself and his surrounds in the creation of his own fantastical narrative for his upcoming exhibition Paradise. This new collection of photographic works are to be unveiled on the SGAR website Thursday April 23.

Featuring a series of self-portraits, Paradise depicts tropes of glamour and class to explore the role of fashion in the performance of identity, highlighting how the dressed body functions as a platform to project an individuals’ articulation of self.

Modifying the human form, Davies’ challenges the calculated approach to dressing, highlighting the potential for playfulness and subversion within this form of self-expression.

Davies was awarded the Pedestrian Photo of the Year 2013. He was selected as a finalist in the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Prize in 2015 and 2014 and the Churchie National Emerging Art Prize 2014. His work has also recently been exhibited in a major solo exhibition at Kick Arts Cairns.
