Project Description

GROUP EXHIBITION

JAMES BARTH + DANA LAWRIE

EXHIBITION DATES | February 27 – April 9, 2016

EXHIBITION CATALOGUE | Essay by Jenna Baldock

SGAR’S summer residency with Brisbane artists Dana Lawrie and James Barth has come to a close. The intensive month long studio residency will culminate in the launch of Dirty Blonde. Dirty Blonde reveals connections and distinctions between the two contemporary self-portraiture practices.

From photoshoot to execution, Barth and Lawrie implement similar processes and methodologies. As both the producer and product of work, they photograph, digitally render, and translate the image to paint. Deconstructing and analysing the physical self, Barth employs censorship in the construction of a trans narrative, while Dana explores the transient nature of the human form.
