Project Description

GROUP EXHIBITION | AROUND

EXHIBITION OPENING | 5 – 7pm Saturday February 18, 2017

EXHIBITION DATES | 18 FEBRUARY – 11 MARCH 2017

Continuing our commitment to supporting local emerging arts practice, Spiro Grace Art Rooms (SGAR) is excited to announce our gallery will reopen for 2017 on February 18 with Around, a group exhibition developed by Lisa Bryan-Brown during an intensive, one-month curatorial residency over our summer closure.

Around considers the relationship between the dual concerns of minimal abstraction and materiality in the practices of Madeleine Keinonen, Alice Nelson, and Rachael Wellisch. Each of these three artists employs process-driven mediums, creating seductive installations of works that explore elusive conceptual territory. Keinonen, Nelson, and Wellisch each utilise an appealing combination of formalist and organic aesthetic approaches to create pieces that contemplate issues of fluidity and substance.

We are excited to have Brisbane curator and writer Lisa Bryan-Brown in the gallery on our 2016/2017 Summer Residency Program. Bryan-Brown’s curatorial approach centres on a feminist methodology, paired with an increasing interest in post-minimalist art practices. This dual focus has manifested in her recent exhibition Less at the Laundry Artspace (2016), and will be explored further in Around, the outcome of her residency with SGAR.

Bryan-Brown was Level ARI’s Emerging Curator in Residence in 2013 after graduating from the Queensland College of Art with First Class Honours (2012). She has curated exhibitions at Griffith University Art Gallery, POP Gallery and MetroArts as well at artist-run initiatives such as The Hold Artspace, Level ARI, The Laundry Artspace and Inhouse ARI.

Her curatorial practice is supported by an appetite for writing, with publications spanning numerous catalogue essays for such artists as Gerwyn Davies, Louise Bennett, Megan Cope, Elizabeth Willing, Leena Riethmuller and Yannick Blattner. Lisa’s articles have featured in Art Monthly Australasia, Freerange Journal, and Common Ground Journal.
