Project Description

Moment Before by Sophie Bottomley.

07 August — 30 August 2014

EXHIBITION OPENING: 6 – 8pm Thursday, August 7, 2014

Sophie Bottomley creates objects based on the repetition of commercially available materials. By hand, Bottomley has transformed thousands of glass beads, hundreds of paper sheets and kilometres of thread into sensuous forms, which evoke, repel and reflect our capacity for desire.

Bottomley’s practice is concerned with abstract forms and their potential to convey feeling. The Shape of the Mouth recalls the powerful symbolic properties of the body and it’s associations with intimacy, absence and the abject. Emotionally resonant, the title of the exhibition is a point of entry into a focused grouping of works dealing with feelings of loss and longing.

Sophie Bottomley is a 2014 recipient of the Australia Council’s Art Start grant and the 2013 winner of 15 Artists, an invitational art prize judged by Chris Saines, Director of the Queensland Art Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art Brisbane. The Shape of the Mouth is Bottomley’s third solo exhibition after graduating from the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University in 2011 with a First Class Honours and a BFA.
